So I just finished reading a story about a stabbing that just took place at a high school near Pittsburgh, Pa. The attacker was a sophomore and he injured 20 students and staff. Several victims had life threatening injuries and 4 of them required immediate helicopter transport to a Level 1 Trauma Center.
What could have been done to prevent this or to at least lessen the damage?
There are several things that could be done such as metal detectors, and training and arming teachers, however many times that is not an option.
I am a HUGE fan of starting on the front line and providing teachers and staff HIGH QUALITY recurring training in how to deal with threatening and combative people ranging from students, to parents, and anyone in between.
This means teaching them de-escalating techniques, instruction on how to take shelter from an attack, and finally how to fight back when there is no other option.
At ARCS our goal is to teach you how to prepare your mind for a violent encounter and then how to apply simple, easy to learn techniques that will keep you and those around you alive when all options have been exhausted and you have no choice but to fight back.
We are each responsible for the safety of ourselves and those around us. More often than not we can’t wait for the police to show up and save the day. Remember, when seconds count the police are just minutes away….
