There are over 33,000 videos of a wrist grabdefense on YouTube. That only tells me there are over 33,000 self-defense instructors who don’t know their ass from a hole in the ground.
Who’s attacking people like this?
If someone decides to grab your wrist – that’s the least of your problems. The wrist grab (if it even happens) is only the beginning – it pre-empts the REAL attack. The wrist grab is simply to hold down your arm for what is coming ½ second behind it….the slap, the punch, and then the drag down an alley or to a waiting car…
Don’t waste your time with “non-issue” defenses like this, you don’t need them. They eat up valuable time, time better spent on well…anything else.
If a wrist grab defense by itself is something you teach as self-defense you need to seriously re-evaluate your system…and if you’re instructor teaches you this – run, run very far away.
Don’t get me wrong, putting hot girls in your video works, but 5-10 variations of a wrist releases!!!! Are you f’ing kidding me?!?!?
These Brazilian Jiu Jitsu “Gracie kids” DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY’RE TALKING ABOUT, I see them from time to time trying to fit the round BJJ peg into the square self-defense hole. They don’t know why they’re doing and are basically teaching old Kodokan Judo self-defense that didn’t work back then either.
Do you see how complicated this is? Imagine a grown man really attacking a women. He’s going to grab any part of you and violently shake the crap out of you. You will not be able to maintain your balance long enough to try any of this crap in these YouTube videos and while you’re trying to figure out which of the 5 wrist releases to use, he’s going to knock you out and stuff you in his trunk.
Here’s a dollar, buy a clue – If ANY wrist release is going to work, then you could simply tell your attacker to STOP and pull your hand away.
You’re welcome, I just saved you hours of needless practice.
Now if you’re in a situation where you can’t pull away from your attacker’s grip and he ignores your verbal commands then it’s CLOBBERING TIME – Step offline and immediately hit him in the face and nuts repeatedly with any free hand, foot, or head…HARD!. When he reacts, pull away and escape.
If your attacks don’t have any effect and he just stares at you – well you should have spent your time practicing movement and hitting something REALLY HARD to learn how to generate power instead of trying to memorize a bunch of B.S. wrist releases (which means, I didn’t train you).
Look – if you can’t hit someone hard enough to get a reaction THEN THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL YOU POSSESS THE POWER TO PERFORM A WRIST RELEASE!
I know, I know – you don’t want to hit him and get him “angrier”.
Time to grow up, here’s a NEWS FLASH – No one should ever put their hands on you and if you tell him to let you go and he doesn’t, well he doesn’t really give a shit about you, your feelings, and he’s going to take what he wants.
Stop this “measured force” and “use of force continuum” crap: he grabs you – you grapple with him, he hits you then you hit him…this doesn’t work in law enforcement (they only do it to try to protect the department form lawsuits, but it gets officers hurt and killed frequently) and it doesn’t work in the street. It only works in the bad guy’s favor because he’s controlling the violence which means he controls the outcome.
If he doesn’t let go – blast him – if you wait for him to start hitting you, you’re on the defensive and you are dead meat. Remember, you’re legally justified to do defend yourself in this manner every place on the planet.
I know, it’s a scary proposition, but that’s why we train, to prepare for these unfortunate situations.
How about ZERO wrist releases – a verbal command and then start attacking? They will loosen up, or let go, as soon as you start hitting them.
It takes thousands of repetitions until a technique starts to become instinctive. What do you have time for 5,000 random, complicated wrist releases that you can only use in 1 specific situation or 1,000 hard hitting strikes that you can use in ANY SITUATION where someone makes the mistake of putting his hands on you?
Punch. Hammer fist, elbow, kick, knee, and stomp. Combatives style…Blast, Blast, Blast…. repeat.
Real attacks are VIOLENT, BRUTAL and UNFORGIVING. It’s not going to be some 150 pound Abercrombie Model grabbing your wrist, stopping and waiting for you to do something. It’s going to be some sociopath rapist or junkie who wants to take what you have.
Just because you like your instructor, doesn’t mean his self-defense is going to work.
You need to get real, get mean and get pissed off. Train to hit hard – no crap. Then it doesn’t matter how he grabs you – you have the universal answer…PAIN and INJURY.
